IN SCHOOL PROGRAM:

INVOLVING YOUTH IN CHANGE PROCESS

Concept: “Working from the inside out.”

Youth needs to play an integral upfront part in the challenges confronting students today in our schools and communities. They must be given a voice in the solving of their issues. They must be taught how to acknowledge, feel, control, and effectively express their emotions in confronting day to day challenges. They must be taught to “deal” now rather than “explode” later.

Philosophy

If students are aided in changing their inside (thinking, beliefs), they will change their outside (environment). Changes in thinking, beliefs and attitudes, most certainly bring about changes in behavior.

Curriculum

The central focus of the curriculum and related materials is the building/ rebuilding of the foundation upon which the family and community is built . . . the individual.

Program Design

The program design is intended to provide students with a keen sense of self, self-confidence and with the inter/intra-/intrapersonal skills necessary to deal with their personal, academic, career, and lifetime needs. The program is designed to develop skills and strategies for developing and reinforcing positive self-images in students. It consists of weekly sessions and parent support forums.

Weekly Session

The weekly sessions are the heart of the program. Students meet weekly with the facilitator to discuss personal, academic, career, and lifetime issues. The primary thrust of the sessions is to develop the group support and accountability that will provide students with positive peer support and peer pressure. The relationships and camaraderie developed in these group sessions provide students with positive peer pressure to deal effectively with their problems; support their attempts to stay in school and reinforce attendance, academic achievement and positive self-esteem, self-worth, and self-motivation.

Parent Forums

The purpose of the parent support forum is to involve parents in the program, to provide positive support and enforcement, to help parents deal with their own problems and to support efforts to rear productive young adults.
